Reflections on Easter at Asbury

My favorite day of the year is Easter Sunday. I love the focused celebration on the event that is central to our faith: the resurrection of God’s Messiah, Jesus. This year was another highlight reel for me.

We had over 4,200 persons on our campus. Including Kid’s Ministry, there were seven worship experiences Easter morning. One of the seven was an Easter Vigil Service. This was an 8:00 a.m. traditional service. The Easter Vigil Service is a dramatic re-presentation of the transition from the darkness created by the death of Jesus, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Good Friday until the time in which resurrection light burst from the tomb early Sunday morning. We darkened the sanctuary for the first part of the service and then at the appropriate time the declaration was made, Christ is risen, He is risen indeed! There was a tremendous cacophony of noise, light burst into the room as windows were uncovered and the great processional occurred as we sang, Christ the Lord is Risen Today.

This was the first time we had an Easter Vigil Service. Many people said that this was the most powerful Easter Service they had ever attended. We are planning to have another Easter Vigil Service next year.

The highlight of the day was the privilege we had to perform 28 baptisms and reaffirmation of baptisms! The resurrection of Jesus means that there is nothing in all of creation, neither sin, nor the evil one, nor death that can prevent us from beginning again in life. There are times when we all need a restart. Resurrection tells us that there is no obstacle in life that God cannot overcome. Jesus Christ is alive and well. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is working for good in your life.

He is risen!
