One week from today we will go to the polls and vote for the next President of the United States. I suppose there are many of you, like me, who will be glad to have this angry, contentious campaign behind us. Then again, we wonder, what is the future going to hold for us?
There certainly seems to be an unusual amount of upheaval throughout the world. All of this can create a level of angst within us. It is precisely for these reasons that God’s word is a reminder to us of the big picture.
I think of the following words:
When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do? The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them. Psalm 11:3-4
Simply stated, God’s got it! Yes we humans do a really good job creating pain and chaos. I’m reminded of a question that the London Times newspaper posed many years ago, “What is wrong with the world?” To which the novelist G. K. Chesterton replied:
G. K. Chesterton
The problem with humanity is humanity itself. Thank goodness, God has done something about it. Do we need to be passionately engaged with the issues facing us? Absolutely! Do we need to lie awake at night worrying? Absolutely not!
As Martin Luther said in his great hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God:
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing,
Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus it is he;
Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.
