The gospels record that before Jesus began his ministry he spent forty days fasting in the desert, where Satan tempted him. The season of Lent originated as a remembrance of these forty days of fasting by Jesus and as a model for Christians to prepare for Easter. In the early church, Christians did partial fasts on Monday through Saturday of Lent (Sundays were celebrations of resurrection and technically not a part of Lent).
